Generally small wind turbines are called by wind turbines with power of 10 kW or less. Small wind turbines are mainly composed of the following parts: wind turbines, generators, rotators, speed regulate mechanisms, yawing mechanisms, braking mechanisms and towers.

1. Classification by Axis Position
According to the position of wind turbine axis, it can be divided into horizontal axis wind turbine and vertical axis wind turbine.
(1) Horizontal axis wind turbine: The blades of horizontal axis wind turbine revolves around a horizontal axis, and the wind axis is parallel to the wind direction. The blades on the wind wheel are installed radially, perpendicular to the rotating axis, and at an angle with the rotating plane of the wind wheel (called installation angle). The number of wind turbine blades is 1 to 10 (mostly 3, 5, 6). It has a higher utilization rate of wind energy at high speed, but it needs a higher wind speed at start-up.
(2) Vertical axis wind turbine: The blades of vertical axis wind turbine rotates around a vertical axis, and the wind axis is perpendicular to the wind direction. Its advantage is that it can accept the wind from any direction, so when the wind direction changes, there is no need for the opposite wind.
2. Classification by power
According to the power of wind turbines, they can be divided into large, medium, small and micro wind turbines. Power < 1KW is a miniature 1-10KW wind turbine. The medium-sized wind turbine with power between 10 kW and 100 kW is called a medium-sized wind turbine. The large-scale wind turbine with power above 100 kW is called a megawatt wind turbine.
However, with the breakthrough of single-machine capacity, 1MW and above are gradually called medium-sized and large-scale wind turbines. Small wind turbines have a single capacity of several hundred kilowatts.
Despite the diversity of wind turbines, they can be classified into two categories:
(1) Horizontal axis wind turbine
The rotation axis of the wind blade is parallel to the wind direction.
(2) Vertical axis wind turbine
The rotating axis of the wind blade is perpendicular to the ground or the direction of the airflow.
①Horizontal axis wind turbine. Horizontal axis wind turbine can be divided into lift type and resistance type. Lift wind turbines have fast rotation speed and resitance wind turbines have slow rotation speed. For wind power generation, lifting horizontal axis wind turbine is mostly used. Most horizontal axis wind turbines have facing wind (upwind) devices, which can rotate with the change of wind direction, and ensure that the blade rotation surface is perpendicular to the incoming wind at all times. Small wind turbines, which use tail rod rudder (Fig. 1), and large wind turbines, which use wind direction sensor elements and servo motor drive mechanism to achieve automatic upwind.

Horizontal axis wind turbines come in many styles, some with reversed blades, some with multiple wind turbines blades installed on a tower to reduce the cost of the tower under certain conditions of output power, and some horizontal axis wind turbines generate whirlpools around the wind turbines, concentrate the airflow and increase the airflow speed.
②Vertical axis wind turbine. Vertical axis wind turbines do not need to face the wind when the wind direction changes, which is a major advantage over horizontal axis wind turbines. It not only simplifies the structure design, but also reduces the gyroscopic force of wind turbines when facing the wind.
